Mandel Leadership Institute to Host "Policy and Practice" Forums with Professor David K. Cohen
NOVEMBER- The Mandel Leadership Institute will be hosting two forums with David K. Cohen, Professor of Education Policy and Education at The University of Michigan, USA.
In the first of the two forums, "Policy and Practice", which will be held on Thursday 22nd November, Professor Cohen will explore his ideas concerning the relationship between policymakers and Practice. To what extent is this relationship one of mutual dependency? Policymaker's legitimacy and political interests depend on the success of implementing policies in practice; whereas practitioners have their own incentives to execute policy, for it gives them
legitimate authority, offers valuable resources and failure could weaken the interests and position of the practitioner. After this initial presentation the ideas will be opened to discussion.
This presentation is based on Professor Cohen's article "Policy and Practice" in a new book The State of Education Policy Research, edited by Susan H.Fuhrman et. al. A copy of this article will be sent by email to those who RSVP indicating they will participate in the forum.
The second meeting, "Policy and Practice: The Crisis in Education in Israel" will take place on Wednesday 28th November. In this forum Professor Cohen will explore the idea of mutual dependency as a lens through which to view the current educational crisis in Israel, and consider its implications for the role of teachers in education policy. What might we need to attend to in order that both parties can best accommodate the concerns and capabilities of the other?
